What I Do

I'm a Design Strategist (UX) with a background in Engineering and Visual Design.

I'm a creative problem solver and design thinker. I balance design, technology, and business priorities to guide the creation of user-centered, innovative digital products and services.

I oversee product vision from high level to a low execution level. I lead and be hands-on in multidisciplinary teams through all activities for problem reframing, research discovery, insight synthesis, uncovering of core value propositions, concept ideation, and prototyping of digital products or new business opportunities.

I have designed complex digital products for FinTech, Automotive and Real Estate Industries. I also lecture Experience Design courses at Communication Faculty of Kadir Has University.

How I Work

Product design is all about solving people's problems in the simplest way possible.

If your product or service doesn't solve any problems, nobody will use it. Well, why should they? That's the very essence of user-centered design approach; Giving people proper tools to solve their problems.

As a Design Strategist, I need to understand business objectives better than anybody else. In order to do that, First I deeply observe and try to understand the industries I'm designing for and the entire ecosystem around them. (You can't design an innovative stock trading app if you don't know how stock markets work.)

Then, together with stakeholders, we can answer some important questions:

  • - What problems do we solve?
  • - Who have these problems?
  • - Why are we doing this?
  • - How are we doing this?
  • - What do we want to achieve?
Answering these questions helps me understand the user experience of a product as a whole; not purely as interaction (feel) or visual (look) design part. Only after that it makes sense to move to the design process which includes following steps:

My Design Thinking Process

  • Step 1.

    Empathizing with users

    I empathize with users to understand them through research and cognitive sciences. If we know our users, we also know their problems.
    Through research, we can also understand their motivations, behaviors(Thank you Neuroscience! :)) and even the way they interact with their environments both physically and digitally which can help us shape look § feel of the product on later steps.

  • Step 2.

    Defining Problems

    Once I discover where users' problems exist, then I can pinpoint users' needs and start to think about whether these problems can be turned into innovative opportunities.

    Ideation

    Together with stakeholders from Product, Design and Development teams, I lead brainstorming sessions to come up with potential and actionable solutions to user's problems.

  • Step 4.

    Prototyping and Testing

    This is the fun part! I test shortlisted solutions through series of prototypes to see if they really work. Then, return to stakeholders and users for their feedback to answer one of the most important questions of the entire process: "Does this solution solve our users' problems in the simplest and easiest way possible?"

Once we ensure that our solutions are valid then we can put our vision into effect and materialize our product.

  • Step 1.

    Developing a UX Strategy

    I work together with stakeholders to develop a UX strategy.

    UX Strategy is the intersection between Business Strategy and User Experience Design. It simply describes how to achieve business goals through experience design methodologies.
    Despite its fancy name, UX strategy is a simple, short, and conceptual document with 4 sections: Vision Statement, UX Manifesto, Design Criteria and Success Metrics.

    Although it's short, (2 A4s maximum please) it's the most important document of implementation process as it makes sure product, design, and development teams are on the same page during the entire production phase. It also works as a reference document whenever we ask why?

  • Step 2.

    Designing for User Experience

    I lead and oversee design team through entire UX process.
    I also work on low-level execution if necessary. UX process includes (but not limited to) the steps below:
    - Information Architecture
    - UX / UI Writing
    - Wireframing
    - Interaction Design
    - Prototyping
    - User Testing
    - UI Design

    Testing and Measuring UX Success

    Product design is an iterative process. After product launch, I make sure to get feedback from users through user testing, analytics, and observation in order to improve the final product.

    Core metrics like traffic or conversion may tell you many things about your product but they hardly tell you about the quality of user experience. I work together with product team and use Google's H.E.A.R.T Framework to measure UX success. Then we can use this information to improve the product.

About Me

I'm a storyteller with a technical mindset.

I studied Geophysical Engineering at Istanbul Technical University. Geophysics introduced me to the beautiful world of data. It was all about collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data and I simply loved the idea of turning data into meaningful information to understand and model nature patterns through mathematics.

I was also into design since high school. But during my MSc, it became a passion. I took visual communication design classes and started to do freelance design work. After I got my MSc in Geophysics, I decided to go on a creative career path and got my first design position.

I'm Generation X. The generation that witnessed analog to digital transition. I've designed user interfaces for more than 14 years. I feel lucky to have witnessed the evolution of Human-Computer Interaction in the last 20 years which gave me great insights on user-centered design and design thinking. Since 2011, I combine my visual design experience with data analysis skills from my engineering background to deliver digital services, products, and experiences.

My other half is a music producer. I think music is simply one of the best inventions of our species. I'd call my style Melancholic Electronica. I released and album in 2015 and keep releasing music through my digital label since then. Currently, I'm working on an EP inspired by stories from Anatolia.
